LESSONS
We're starting a new series of beginning lessons on Saturday, September 20 at 9:00 am.   You may even hear announcements on the radio for the lessons.   Mike Molinari will be teaching lessons for beginners - the first two lessons are free.   Let your friends know.  There are flyers at the bridge club.   Pick up a few and distribute them where you can.   Our bridge club grows when we get new members from the lessons.

UNIT NEWS
PRO-AM SWISS TEAMS

We'll have a Pro-Am Swiss Team Championship game and Pot Luck on Sunday, September 21.   You don't need to get a team - you don't even need to get a partner.   All you need to do is bring some food for the pot luck lunch starting at 12:45.    We'll draw names for teams from all the players who come to the game.

MORGAN JOHNSON MAKES LM!
Congratulations to long time member Morgan Johnson who made Life Master this week.  Morgan plays at the Madera Bridge Club every week except when he's off hunting or fishing out of state.   He and Denny Green played at the Madera Bridge Club during the recent STAC week and finished fourth overall and first in flight B to win 11.75 silver points, enough to meet his silver point requirement and make LM.  Congratulations!

PLACES  AND FACES

At the Monterey 299er sectional, John Simpson was second in one open pairs and fourth in flight C in another.   At the Phoenix regional, Howard Reed and Pat Simpson were first in flight C in the open pairs.  Congratulations!
We're expecting to see Ann Barnes, our former unit secretary, who moved to Florida several years ago, for a few days.   It should be great to have her back.
Welcome to new members Marilyn Griswold, Virginia Hall, June Weber, and Tay Cherry.
Our condolences go to the family of Jackie Noblat, who recently passed away.

GOLD POINT INSTANT MATCH POINT GAME
September 11 Evening

Thursday evening September 11 is the annual Instant Match Point game.   This is that exciting game where the traveling score sheet tells you instantly what your score is, with each board score ranging from 0 to 100, just like a percentage score.  The top pair in each game can win one gold point.  Each hand is taken from a tournament from several years ago, and the match points are determined by the results at that tournament.  Players all receive booklets with analyses by the Larry Cohen, winner of 23 North American Championships.  There will be no Friday night game on September 12.

NON-LM SECTIONAL
This year's Non-LM sectional was the best attended ever.   Perhaps it was because we changed from a 299er sectional to a nonLM sectional.   Or perhaps it was because our players knew what great hospitality Dora Gostanian and Mary Jo Davila would provide.   Whatever the reason, we're happy that so many players had a good time at the tournament.
The top master point winner was Blake Fuessenich, with Dora Gostanian a close second.   Thanks go to Dora and Mary Jo for the great hospitality and lunches they served, and to Skip Miller and Byron Steinert for again providing lessons to go with the lunch.  Next year the tournament will be bigger and better!
CLUB NEWS
The Saturday afternoon game will start at 12:45 p.m., starting on September 20th when our lesson series starts on Saturday mornings.   That will give everyone an extra 45 minutes to fix their lunch before they play bridge.

Mary Lou will have a membership game to celebrate Labor Day.  If you aren't out of town for the holiday, please join her game.
Someone finally guessed her score at Maggie's Guess your Score game.   Mary Jo Davila had a premonition and got her score right on the button.   So what if she had a 46.72% game - she won a free play!   There will be another guess your score game on September 30 for Maggie's Tuesday 750 club.
Top Oakhurst winners for August are Don McCartin, Mike Molinari, Karen McCartin, Ken Doig, Al Crane, Gardner Murray, and Karen Henning.
The North American Pairs qualifying period is over, and there are over 70 players qualified to play in the Unit finals on Sunday, November 9th.   Those who are in the top half of their flight will qualify to play in the District 21 finals in January.
We're planning a dinner party Friday night October 10th.  Save that date on your calendar.
Skip Miller was the top player at the Fresno Bridge Club for July, and still leads for 2008.   George Dalition was the top 99er for July, and he also leads for 2008.   Don Winton and Steven Blumberg were right behind

Top Fresno players for July was Skip  Miller, followed by Maggie Mahaffey and Steve Sharp.  Skip Miller now leads for 2008, but we don't have the list on line.   George Dalition was the top 99er for July.  George Dalition still leads for 2008.

CHANGES
`New rules start this month.  Now if we only had the rule books to enforce them!
