FRESNO HALLOWEEN SECTIONAL
Gerard Laquerriere Wins Presidents Award
Joni Roberts Takes 99er Award

Thanks to Dave Shuster for managing the sectional - attendance was up 12 tables from the last fall sectional.   Thanks go to Mary Jo Davila, Hospitality chairman, who made sure that we had plenty of refreshments.   The new BBQ Joint two doors down provided a great tri-tip and chicken dinner on Sunday.   They will soon be open for takeout - try them.
Congratulations to President Award winner Gerard Laquerriere, top master point winner at the sectional among Fresno Unit 522 members.   Top master point winners Warren Cederborg, Jay Roll, and Jim Slinger all belong to other units.  Top 99er was Joni Roberts of Coarsegold.  Congratulations!

UNIT NEWS
It looks like we will have a new home sometime in the next several months.   We'll have more information when the details are completed.   There will be some expenses in moving.   We already are starting fund raising activities.   Jill Wood sold Starbucks gift cards, which made a profit of $500.   Our current project is collecting spare change.   If you'd like to donate, just drop change into the big bottle at the clubhouse.   Some people have even put in folding money, which is OK, too.
The Unit Christmas party is Sunday December 7, 2008.   The annual meeting and election of board members are also held that day.   We will be mailing ballots with the next issue of Aces, Places, and Faces.   Several people have offered to serve on the unit board.  Nominations are still open if you wish to nominate yourself or another member.   Just notify nominating committee members Maggie Mahaffey or Jill Wood. .
HOWARD REED AND PAT SIMPSON
MAKE LIFE MASTER

At the Los Angeles regional, Howard Reed and Pat Simpson were third in flight C of the Open Pairs, first in flight C of the side game, and with John Simpson, second in bracket 3 of the knockout teams.   This was enough to earn both Howard and Pat their Life Master gold card.  Congratulations!
Also at the Los Angeles regional, John Simpson was first in flight C of the 299er pairs, Gerard Laquerriere, Mun Takeda, Allyson Farrell, and Robert Rouch were fourth in flight B of the afternoon Swiss teams, and first in flight B of the evening Swiss teams.  Richard Meffley was fifth in the Swiss teams.  Congratulations!
It's been many years since the Los Angeles district has had a great place for their regionals.  The Pacific Palms Resort was a fine  site for a bridge tournament.   The tournament committee provided outstanding hospitality, including a banquet dinner on Sunday.  Unfortunately, they will not be able to continue holding their tournaments there.  We hope they are successful in finding a new location for next year.

PLACES  AND FACES

Curt Reeves and Jay Roll were third and fifth in the open pairs at the Sonora sectional.
Dee Beebe won first prize at the Big Fresno Fair for her quilt.

Get well wishes go to Denny Green, who just came home from rehab.
We are saddened to report that Linda Sims passed away after back surgery.  She played in the evening games and the 750 games and enjoyed all her bridge friends.  Our condolences go to her family and friends.

CLUB NEWS
Mike Molinari is starting 49er games at the same times as recent lessons.   Tuesday night at 6:30 and Wednesday morning at 9 am will now be 49er games.   If you have under 50 master points, you are welcome to play.   Bring a friend and make it twice as fun.
Skip Miller will give a lesson at 12:30 before the Sunday game at 1 pm, starting November 16.   Come early to learn a new trick or two, and stay for the unit game.    Morgan Johnson was the top master point winner in Madera for October, followed by Judy Hecht, Everett Bondeson, and Bob Mortimer. Denny Green still leads for 2008, followed by Morgan Johnson, Dan Cartago, Bob Mortimer, and Everett Bondeson.
Top winners at the Fresno Bridge Club for September  was Skip Miller, followed  Steve Sharp.   They are also the top players for 2008.  The top 99er for September was John Simpson, followed by Linda Coppersmith, who now leads for   2008.
Friday November 7th at about 6:15 pm will be the first Fabulous Friday Feast, followed by a club championship at 7 pm.  Come join us for a fine dinner.
