ELECTION The Aces, Places, and Faces includes a ballot for the board of directors for 2009 and 2010. Please vote for up to 5 candidates. The candidates are, in alphabetical order: Laura Da Costa, who directs some of the club games with her mother Mary Lou. Laura also directed the Sunday Unit games before she moved to Illinois to complete her education and to teach. Laura now teaches college here. Doris Frazer is a long time member of the Fresno unit. She made Life Master in 2007 and is still one of the top master point winners at the club every month. Dora Gostanian is a current board member. She has been responsible as chairman or cochairman for the hospitality at our sectionals for the last few years. She cooked the main part of our Sunday dinner several times. Bert Rettner is a current board member and member of the site selection committee. He has been a life master for many years and is one of the top players at the bridge club every month. John Simpson just started playing duplicate a little over a year ago, but he is learning fast. He has been playing in sectional, regional, and national tournaments and learning more from each one, earning over 100 points so far this year. He can show us what the new players want. Byron Steinert is a former Fresno Unit president, board member, and Distinguished Service Award recipient. He has chaired our education committee and is currently site selection committee chairman. UNIT NEWS We are very close to agreeing to a lease at a new location. We hope everyone will be happy with a new location. The landlord has agreed to many building improvements, but there will be other upgrades we will want to do ourselves. The year 2009 should be a year of change for the Fresno Bridge Club. |
UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links California and nearby tournaments Bay Area TournamentsUNIT FUNDRAISERS PLAYER AUCTIONS, STARBUCKS, SPARE CHANGE Jill Wood has embarked on a series of fundraisers to help us at moving time. First we sold $20 Starbucks cards to our members for $20. That was so successful that we will do it again so that you can have gifts for friends for Christmas. There is a big spare change jar at the clubhouse, which is filling up slowly. Drop some change in it if your pockets are getting heavy. We notice some people have dropped in paper change. That's OK, too. The new fundraiser is an auction to play with one of your favorite bridge players. At the bridge club is a board with the names and pictures of many of our top players. Make a bid and put it in the envelope with the player's name. The high bidder in each envelope at the end of the year gets to play a bridge game with the player that was won. Just call up the player that you won and arrange a time to play. Another way to help the building fund is through the soft drink sales. All profits go to the Building Fund. If you just want to donate, you can buy soft drinks for the sale. |
PLACES AND FACES At the North American Championships in Boston, Rose Boot had a Flight B section top in the side game. John & Tina Renna were first and fifth in the evening 299er game. At the San Ramon sectional, John Simpson won bracket C of the 199er Swiss teams. Speedy recovery wished go to Doris Frazer and Martha Franks, recovering from recent surgeries. Welcome to new members Bryan Low, Nancy Kyle, William and Diane Civiello, and Jackie Finn. Our sympathy goes to Dora Gostanian, whose father recently passed away. UNIT CHRISTMAS PARTY Our annual Christmas Party is Sunday, December 7, at noon. The unit board members are planning a dinner at noon, so come and enjoy. As required by our bylaws, we will have a short annual meeting. That will be followed by the conclusion of the election for the new unit board of directors, and a Unit Championship bridge game. There will be a limited game and an open game, assuming enough of our members come to the party so we can have two events. Happy Holidays! CLUB NEWS Several of our clubs will be celebrating the holidays. Ginny Dow will be celebrating with prizes and treats on Thursday afternoon on December 11. Maggie's 750 game will have a Christmas party on Tuesday December 16 at 1 pm. Mary Lou will hold a Holiday Pot Luck at 11:15 on Monday, December 29th before the game at noon. Richard will have a Christmas party on December 12th at 6:30 before the STAC game. Nearly all clubs will hold the Sectional Tournament at Clubs games the week of December 8 through 14. It's another chance to win silver points. There will be no STAC game on Tuesday morning or Saturday. The 49er games on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning will have club championship games rather than STAC games. Check with your club director to be sure a STAC game will be held. Some of the games will be closing for the holidays. There will be no 49er games or Friday night games the last two weeks of the year. No games on Christmas or Christmas eve or evening games on New Year's Eve. Enjoy the holiday! Mike Molinari will start part 2 of the beginning lessons on Play of the Hand Saturday December 6th at 9 am. Tell your friends! Thanks to Gwen Davey, Angie Heisdorf, Mannie Dichner, and Roberta Beam - they really made the Fabulous Friday Feast fabulous.
