FEBRUARY 5-8 Dave Shuster has scheduled the winter sectional for February 5 through 8. Flyers are at the bridge club, and will soon be distributed to tournaments and to other bridge clubs. The flyer is also posted on the ACBL website - just go to www.acbl.org, click on tournaments, then upcoming sectionals, then use the drop down menu for February 2009. The schedule is similar to past tournaments, with open and 299er sections nearly every session. Mary Jo Davila and Dora Gostanian would like your help with refreshments during the tournament. Get your partner now, but call partnership chairman Kay Christman at 449-0966 if you can't find a partner. UNIT ELECTION Welcome to new board members Laura DaCosta, Doris Frazer, John Simpson and returning board members Dora Gostanian and Bert Rettner. We will elect officers and appoint committee members at the first unit board meeting, on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at 4:45 pm. Members are welcome to attend. Our thanks go to retiring board members John Oakshott, Anita Penny, and Dave Shuster. John has served on the building committee for the last two years and was committee chairman. Anita Penny has served on the board several times, as well as serving as unit president and representative to District 22. Dave Shuster is vice-president and tournament chairman. He has organized our sectionals so that tournaments are now scheduled several years in advance. Thanks again. UNIT NEWS There are a few details to wrap up before the lease is finalized and the contractor starts construction. In a few months, we should be playing bridge at a brand new location. PLACES AND FACES At the Palm Springs regional, Curt Reeves and Jay Roll were twelfth in the open pairs. Richard Meffley and Warren Cederborg were fifth in the open pairs and third in the fast open pairs. Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda were third in the compact KO teams. and nearby tournaments UNIT FUNDRAISERS JANUARY 24 POT LUCK We will have several fundraising activities in the next few months so that we'll have the funds for bridge club improvements when we move in 2009. The player auction ends on December 31, 2008. It's not too late to up the bidding to play with one of our top Life Masters. Just open an envelope on the player board and make a higher bid than the last bid on the bid sheet. Winning bids should be announced on New Year's eve. A fund-raising game for the moving fund will be held on Saturday, January 24 at 12:45 pm, following a pot luck lunch at noon. All card fees, less clubhouse rent and ACBL fees, will go to the Moving Fund. If you'd like to contribute more, then drop some money in the spare change jar. CLUB NEWS David and Diane Zealear were eighth overall in Flight B in the STAC game. Jay Roll and Richard Meffley were second overall, and Gerard Laquerriere and Warren Cederborg were third overall, playing at the Visalia STAC game. All overalls and section places at STAC games in Fresno are listed in the winners list. Don McCartin, Ken Doig, Gardner Murray, and Mike Molinari lead the Oakhurst master point race for December. The top master point winners for December in Madera were Denny Green and Morgan Johnson, followed by Everett Bondeson. The top player at the Fresno Bridge Club for November was Della Schnell, followed closely by hubby John. Skip Miller retains a big lead for 2008. NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS The Unit finals were held on November 9. Those who qualified in that game may play in the District 21 finals in Burlingame. Flight A plays on January 18 and 19. Flight B (under 2000 master points) plays on January 17. Flight C (nonLM under 500 mp) plays on January 19. If you are qualified in more than one flight, you may play in more than one flight in the District 21 finals. The top three in each flight may play in the North American finals in Houston in March. We moved from District 22 to District 21 mainly so we could travel a shorter distance to the district NAP finals. Let's see several pairs compete in this event.
