WELCOME TO OUR NEW HOME! Saturday May 2, 2009 EDITOR: RICHARD MEFFLEY bridgefresno@hotmail.com (please e-mail to get on e-mail list) |
| WELCOME TO OUR NEW HOME! To all who visit our new Fresno Bridge Center on Saturday, May 2, take a look at the new place. We've spent 45 years at our old home, but it's time for a change. We've spent the last nine years planning for a new facility, and we're finally here. Jill Wood is our hostess for the Open House, but most of our directors and board members will be here to show you around. Meet our members - they all think playing bridge is a great activity. Check out the new chairs and tables. New carpet. New computers and large screen displays. Many other new arrangements. We're putting everything in order to make it a great place to play bridge. We have lots more storage in the kitchen. We added an ice machine so we'll always have cold drinks. We now have two playing rooms so that we can diversify when we need to. At times we may have two games going at once. Other times we may have a bridge game in one room and a lesson in the other. If you are new to bridge, you may want to sign up for upcoming lessons. If you're new to duplicate bridge, try playing a few hands of bridge during the open house. You'll see that duplicate bridge is the same game as rubber bridge or social bridge. Jill Wood has arranged for many silent auction items to make things more interesting today. If you want one, be sure to bid on it. We hope to see many of our visitors come back to the Fresno Bridge Center again and again. Several of us have worked long and hard to bring this facility to you. The search was difficult because we have requirements, including plentiful parking, that are difficult to meet. Our thanks go to Byron Steinert, Judy Nicholson, and John Oakshott who have led the search committee over the years. Special thanks go to Byron Steinert, Kay Chrisman and Mike Molinari, who saw that the new bridge center has all it needs to make playing bridge here a pleasure. More thanks go to Kay and Mike who supervised the move from the Clinton Avenue Clubhouse to the Shaw Avenue Bridge Center. Others, including Jim McKoane, provided needed services. It seems that Kay has spent most of the last two weeks at the bridge center, making sure that everything is working in good order, especially the new computer system. We're hoping everything is now up to speed. WORLDWIDE PAIRS JUNE 5 June 5, 2009, is the World Wilde Bridge Contest. Players from all over the world play the same hands. Results from all over the world are tabulated in England, so your score on every board is compared with the score of every other player in the world. Play Friday at 7 pm, June 5. BRIDGE LESSONS The fourth in the series of bridge lessons will begin on Saturday, May 9th at 9 a.m. The series will be lessons on conventions and more conventions. This will include twelve sessions about some of the most popular conventions. Mike Molinari will give the lessons. Call him at 658-7318 for more information. SOCIAL BRIDGE MAY 22 Social bridge players are invited to a light lunch on Friday, May 22, at 11 am, followed by an afternoon of social bridge. Invite your friends to enjoy the lunch and bridge. The cost is $8. Call Dora Gostanian for reservations, 299-1578. She was directing games even before we moved into the Clubhouse 45 years ago. She considered the bridge club was her home, and treated all her guests with the utmost hospitality. Come for a pot luck lunch at 12:15, with bridge at 1 pm. PLACES AND FACES AL CRANE MAKES LM Congratulations to Al Crane of Coarsegold who is our latest Life Master. Each session players throughout the west will be playing the same hands. The pair with the best score each session could win up to 20 silver points, all in one afternoon. The Visalia Unit hosts its annual sectional tournament May 15th through May 17th. In order to encourage players to play in our neighbor unit's tournament, most of the games here will be closed. The Friday afternoon game, the Saturday morning lesson, and 49 game after the lesson will be held at the bridge center. The top player in March at the Fresno Bridge Club was Steve Sharp, followed by Skip Miller and Wanda Cardella. Steve now leads for 2009.
