| INSTANT MATCH POINT GAME Wednesday Evening Sept 9 The Instant Match Point game is a very special game that is held only once per year in September. The hands are taken from tournaments held long ago. Scores are instantly determined on a 100 top as soon as the traveling score shee is opened. It's a good idea to use a private score for this game, because you will be able to check your match points after every hand. After the game, each player receives a booklet with an expert commentary for each hand. The ACBL gives recognition to the highest scores in the country, and even gives a gold point if you win your section. So come play Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. or 7 p.m. in Madera. SECTIONAL OCTOBER 29 - NOVEMBER 2 It's not too early to get your partner for the Halloween sectional in October. The events will be similar to past sectionals, with one exception: a Compact Knockout Team game Saturday morning and afternoon. Get a team together - maybe we can have several brackets! UNIT NEWS We'll be taking nominations soon for next years' board of directors. Let us know if you'd like to run. The Unit North American Pairs game is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, October 25. We'll have a list at the bridge center and on the website of those who qualified to play. Those who qualify in the unit finals can play in the District 21 finals in February. LESSONS STARTED Mike Molinari had the first of his beginning series on Saturday, August 29 at 9 a.m. Richard Meffley started a beginning series on Tuesday, September 1 at 7 p.m. If you know someone who wants to learn to play, it's not too late to join either series. NONLM SECTIONAL We had almost the same attendance as last year at the nonLM sectional. Door prizes were given to many players as well as prizes for section winners. We heard lots of comments from people who enjoyed the tournament. Thanks to Hospitality Chairmen Dora Gostanian and Mary Jo Davila who prepared lots of snacks and two great lunches. Thanks also go to Byron Steinert, who provided the "Learn" part of Lunch & Learn, aided by a Powerpoint presentation on our big screen. PLACES AND FACES Peter Weber was 4th in the NonLM pairs at the San Diego Sectional. At the San Mateo sectional, John and Tina Renna were first in Flight B in the stratified pairs, and third in Flight C in another stratified pairs. Betty Ann Dunn and Joni Roberts were second and third in the side games at the Eugene, Oregon regional. At the Phoenix regional, John Simpson and Juanita Mason were fourth in Flight C of the Swiss teams, and second in Bracket 5 of the KO teams, with Howard Reed and Pat Simpson. Howard and Pat were also fourth in the Bracket 2 Compact KO teams. Richard Meffley won the open pairs at the Castro Valley sectional. At the Washington DC North American Championships, Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda were 17th in the Spingold KO Teams and 18th in the Open Swiss Teams. Richard Meffley was 41st in the NABC Fast Pairs and 29th in the Open Swiss Teams. Get well wishes go to Virginia Johnson, Lee McKoane, and Cor Yssels. UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links Bay Area Tournaments California and nearby tournaments CLUB NEWS In the Great Western Fun Sectional Tournament at Clubs, D. Zody and Steve Sharp were second overall and won over 13 silver points. Morgan Johnson and Carol Kaufman were third in the auxiliary pairs. Bill Glass and Bert Rettner tied for first in the auxiliary pairs, John and Tina Renna were second in Flight B, and D Zody and Gay Berry sixth in Flight C. Keiko Collins is improving, but is still doing rehab and hopes to be back directing Tuesday morning soon. The Kiwanis Club uses the parking lot during Fresno State football games. If you are playing bridge on a football game day, just tell them that you are a member of the Fresno Bridge Center to play bridge. We'll try to reserve parking spaces near the bridge center for our players. We have lots of Club Championships and Unit Championship games scheduled this month - come win lots of master points! Oakhurst leaders for August were Wally Cucura, Don McCartin, Karen McCartin, Claire Molnar, and Paul Mertens. Madera leaders for July were Dan Cartago, followed by Gay and Larry Slates, and Betty Eden. Madera leaders for August were Judy Hecht, followed by Bob Mortimer and Everett Bondeson, with Morgan Johnson right behind. Everett Bondeson now leads for 2009, with Denny Green and Morgan Johnson right behind. Thanks go to Carol Willoughby for donating very nice serving platters to the Bridge Center. We never have enough serving dishes. Maggie Mahaffey was the top player at the Fresno Bridge Center in July, followed by Steve Sharp, Verlee O'Neill, and Rose Boot. Steve still leads for the year. Al Coppersmith is the top 99er for July, followed by Stephen Blumberg, Bud Thompson, and John Jonassen. Stephen Blumberg leads for the year. ZERO TOLERANCE As we continue to have new players come to our lessons and eventually play on our beginning, intermediate, and open games, it is good to remind everyone of the ACBL's zero tolerance policy. Our directors agreed several years ago to follow the policy. From the ACBL website, we learn that being a good host or guest at each table is encouraged. Greeting our opponents, having two complete convention cards for our opponents to review, and giving them a word of praise when they make a good play is always helpful. Rudeness, bad language, negative comments about the opponents' play, giving lessons at the table when no lesson is requested, and loud arguing with a director's ruling are examples of behavior that should not be tolerated. If anyone at the table behaves in an unacceptable manner, the proper thing to do is call the director. The director can assess penalties even up to removing a player from the game if the behavior does not stop immediately. At tournaments, the director is required to assess a penalty for bad behavior, and remove a player from the event for a second offense. All of us have been at the table when the director is called and a ruling is made. The director's job is to make a decision when called at the table. Although directors enjoy playing on the computer when not busy, it is their job to make a ruling. A player should never let another player make a ruling. If a situation arises and an experienced player makes a ruling, the proper thing to do is say, "Let's call the director and let the director decide." For example, if a player makes a claim, and the explanation with the claim does not satisfy you, the proper thing to do, is say, "I'm not sure, let's call the director."
