| NEW LOCATION FOR HALLOWEEN SECTIONAL OCTOBER 29 - NOVEMBER 1 Our sectional this month has a few changes. The big change is that it will be at our new bridge center, 1320 E. Shaw, Suite 100 for the first time. We've rented extra space in the next buildings to accommodate any crowds. Another thing to watch for is Fresno State's Saturday football game. The Kiwanis Club uses the parking lot for football fans, but we have parking reserved for our tournament players. Just enter the parking lot and tell the attendants that you are going to play bridge. Find the spaces near the bridge center set off for our players. Another change is a new event. Tournament chairman John Simpson has added a two session compact knockout team game on Saturday. Most players love knockout events - it should be fun to get a team of four together and play. If you do well in the morning, you play in the semi-finals and finals in the second session. If things don't go well the first session, you can try the stratified pairs in the afternoon. Dora Gostanian and Mary Jo Davila are again in charge of hospitality, so we know the food will be a treat. All members are welcome to help by bringing refreshments to serve during the games. Ask Dora or Mary Jo when is a good time to bring snacks. We saw that the Bakersfield members brought many treats to their tournament last weekend; we should do as well If your partner skips town, don't stay home and mope. Get a new partner, or call partnership chairman Mike Molinari for help at 559-658-7318. NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS The Unit finals for the North American Pairs is Sunday, October 25 at 1 pm. A list of those who qualified at the Fresno Bridge Center will be updated online and at the club by October 4. Anyone who qualified in June, July, or August may play with any other qualifier in the stratified game on October 25. Those who qualify in the unit finals may play in the District 21 finals in Burlingame. Flight A, open, plays Saturday(qualifying) and Sunday(final), January 30-31. Flight B, under 2,000 mp, plays Sunday January 31. Flight C, nonLM under 500 mp, plays Saturday Janaury 30. All flights play two sessions per day. The top three in each flight may play in Reno in the North American finals in March. PLACES AND FACES Mun Takeda and Gerard Laquerriere were the top master point winners at the Lompoc sectional, winning two open pairs and taking second in another. At the 75th annual All-Western Championships in Santa Clara, Ruth Christensen, Laura Neville, Barbara Thacker and Doris Frazer were second in the Bracket 2 Knockout teams and fifth in the Flight B evening Swiss teams. Pete Weber, Sue Vildosola, Ginny Dow, and Bill McCormick were second in the Bracket 3 KO teams. John Simpson and Angie Heisdorf were fourth and sixth in two 299er pairs. John was also second in another 299er pairs. Richard Meffley was 16th in the open pairs, seventh in the Swiss teams, and 27th in the All Western pairs. John and Tina Renna, and Paul Wilday and Pat Alviso were second in the consolation of the Bracket 2 compact KO teams. John and Peggy Oakshott were third and fourth in the 299er pairs. Jay Roll won the senior pairs. Donny Graham and Keith Lindersmith were fourth in Flight C of the open pairs. At the Orange County regional, Pat Simpson and Howard Reed were third in Bracket IV of the Knockout teams. Bill Glass was third in Flight B of the open pairs. At the Bakersfield sectional, Gerard Laquerriere was third and fifth in the open pairs with MunTakeda, and third and fifth with Paul Schommer. Gerard and Paul won the Swiss teams with Richard Meffley and Robert Rouch. Mun Takeda and Kim Morris were second in Flight B Swiss. Judy Hecht just got home from a cruise to nine cities on the Baltic Sea in time to prepare to be hostess for a charity bridge party for the San Joaquin Conservation District. Her home will be filled with bridge players on October 11. .Get well wishes go to Wanda Cardella - we hope she's able to be at the bridge table soon. UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links Bay Area Tournaments California and nearby tournaments NEW LIFE MASTERS SUE VILDOSOLA, RUTH CHRISTENSEN, and TINA RENNA Congratulations to Sue Vildosola and Ruth Christensen who made LM placing second place in the bracketed KO teams in Santa Clara. We're waiting for word when John Renna gets his last point to make Life Master. Tina Renna has one master point more, so she already made it at the bridge center. Congratulations! CLUB NEWS Maggie Mahaffey will start her Tuesday afternoon 750 game a little bit earlier, starting this month. The start of the game will now be 1:00 pm, with a short lesson at 12:45 pm. Be sure to be there at least by 1 pm when the game starts. Oakhurst players for September are Paul Mertens, Gene Kreighoff, Karen McCartin, Wally Cucura, and Emy Ashcroft. Top Madera players for August were Judy Hecht, followed by Bob Mortimer and Everett Bondeson, and Morgan Johnson. Everett Bondeson leads for 2009, followed by Morgan Johnson, and Larry and Gay Slates. Larry and Gay were top players in September, followed by Rose Wheeler and Barbara Brock. Fresno Bridge Center leaders for August are Bert Rettner, followed by Maggie Mahaffey and Barbara Thacker. Steve Sharp leads for the year, with Maggie Mahaffey and Skip Miller trying to catch up. The 99er leader for August was Estee Strombotnee. George Dalition leads for 2009, with Estee Strombotne next. CELEBRITY STATUS Hey members - Unit 522 has our very own bridge celebrity right here in Fresno! It is my honor to announce that Richard Meffley has just reached the milestone of "Grand Life Master". To do this you have to have done two things: first, to have a National Title and secondly, to have accumulated 10,000 master points. To have 10,000 points makes you a Platinum Life Master but Richard has combined that by also winning the Open Pairs Two Day, Four Session National Event at the Kansas City Spring Nationals in 2001 with Jim Tritt. Richard's parents taught him to play bridge at an early age. He graduated from Bullard High School before going on to Davis. While at Davis he started a new bridge club and also played in Sacramento. After graduating from UC Davis in 1972 Richard returned to Fresno and works for the IRS. He has been a member our our unit since 1967, at that time playing in the evenings as one of the "young kids" remembers Maggie Mahaffey. When our unit was with District 22 Richard was the Vice President and also in charge of the GNT's and NAP's. Now with District 21 Richard is not only our unit President but also our representative to the District Board and a member of the Board of Governors. In 1987 Richard took classes taught by Audrey Grant to improve his teaching techniques and continues to operate small groups and teach lessons. He also attends most Nationals which occur three times a year around the United States. Please congratulate Richard when you see him. We will recognize Richard on Saturday, October 31 before the morning game for the prestigious achievement of Grand Life Master. - Contributed by Jill Wood NEW PLAYERS - PLEASE JOIN THIS YEAR The ACBL is toughening the rules to make life master, effective for all players who are not members as of January 1, 2010. You'll need 500 points to make LM, and all the colored point requirements will be raised. If someday you want to be a life master, join by December 31, 2009.
