UNIT BOARD ELECTIONS
Congratulations to our newly elected Unit Board members, Kay Chrisman, Linda Coppersmith, Mary Jo Davila, Richard Meffley, Mike Molinari, and Jill Wood.   The first meeting of 2010 is at 11 a.m., Sunday, January 3.
Thanks go to retiring board members Maggie Mahaffey and Paul Boyd.  Maggie has been membership chairman for so long that few of our members know when she wasn't in charge of membership.  It's getting close to forty years.  Paul Boyd served as our treasurer for several years, seeing us through the financial complications of our move to our new bridge center.  Little does Paul know that he has to stay on for at least six months to train our next treasurer.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
This year's recipient is Jill Wood.  Since moving here from the Bay Area, where she was vice president and president of our new home, District 22, she has been a great help to our members.
She took over a task that none of us want to do, but all of us are grateful that she got it done, producing a new roster in 2008.   She spearheaded fundraising for our move to the new  bridge center - her efforts brought in over $20,000 in donations, raffles, auctions, and other projects.  We're glad to have Jill as a member of the Fresno Unit.   Thanks, Jill.

CLUB NEWS

PLACES AND FACES

Our players did very well at the San Diego North American Bridge Championships.   It was a great tournament, with lots of refreshments, a beautiful hotel with great facilities for the players, and lots of bridge players.  The show "My Fair Little Old Lady," a revival of a musical that played at bridge tournaments in California forty years ago was still a hit.  Don't forget to save March 11-21, 2010 for the NABC in Reno.
Fresno players did quite well.  Farid Assemi, Ed Wojewoda, Jim Tritt, and Rick Whitworth were third in the  afternoon Senior Swiss Teams.  Rick and Jim also came in 67th in the Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs.  Karen Laws and Gary Lasky won the 49er Pairs.  Richard Meffley was 15th in the Open Board a Match Teams.  Blake Rundquist was 37th in the same event.  Together, they were 52nd in the Blue Ribbon Pairs.  Richard Meffley also was 36th in the North American Swiss Teams.  Verlee O'Neill and Belva Quattrin were 12th in the Open Pairs, and ninth in Flight B of the Open Pairs, with two section tops.  Shirley Blum had a section top in the Blue Ribbon Pairs and was second in the Compact KO teams.  Pat Simpson and Howard Reed were third in Bracket 4 of the KO teams.  John and Pat Simpson were second in the Bracket 4 morning KO Teams.  John Simpson, Sue Vildosolo, and Pete Weber won Bracket 6 KO Teams, and were third in Bracket 8 KO.  Pete and Sue also won a morning KO Teams.   Carolyn Lofton and Bob Endara also brought home some master points.  Joe Fox came in 36th in the Mini Blue Ribbon Pairs, with a section top.  He also was sixth in the Open Pairs with two section tops, and fifth in the side game twice.
At the Palm Springs Regional, Karen Laws and Gary Lasky won the 99er Pairs.  Pat and John Simpson won Flight B of the Swiss Teams, won the Bracket 3 KO Teams, and were second in the Bracket 4 KO teams.
At the Reno Regional, Michael Molinari, Mary Jo Davila, Judy Jessick and Paul Boyd won Flight C of the evening Swiss Team, and were second in Bracket 3 KO Teams.  Rose Boot was third in the KO Teams.
Welcome to new members George Dalition, Geoffrey and Kinda Derushian, Judy Lynn, James Forbes, Donna Miller, Pat Snyder, and Mary Jones.  We have welcomed 23 new members this year!
We hope to see Ina Yssels back playing soon.  Ina is recovering from brain surgery.
Our sympathy is extended to the family of David Vanier of Coarsegold, who recently passed away.
Our sympathy is also extended to Loretta Miller, wife of Hugh Miller, who recently passed away.   Hugh was a frequent player in the evening games, who moved to Idaho a few years ago to be near his children and grandchildren.  He visited several times to play in our sectionals and see his friends here.
Our sympathy goes to Barbara Thacker, whose daughter recently passed away.
Condolences go the family of Bruce Smith, who was our  clubhouse co-chairman for many years, and a former unit president.  He moved to Sacramento to be near his son in the last few years.  He passed away on October 2.   There will be a memorial service in February.
