| GERARD LAQUERRIERE WINS PRESIDENT AWARD JONI ROBERTS 99ER WINNER AT WINTER SECTIONAL Gerard Laquerriere won four events and finished second and third in other events at the Winter Sectiona, winning over 28 master points and the President's Award. Joni Roberts was the top 99er, winning one event and finishing second in three others. Congratulations! Attendance was down from the previous tournament on Thursday and Friday, but attendance picked up with the team games - compact knockouts and Swiss teams - on Saturday and Sunday to come close to previous totals. Thanks to tournament assistant Kay Chrisman, we did not need to bring in additional directors to staff the tournament. In the future, we should have three tournament assistants available to help with the tournament. The first annual Mary Jo Davila Pairs on Friday afternoon was in memory of our unit board member who passed away this year after a short illness. We miss her sense of humor and her hospitality. Trophies were awarded to the winners of the event. Dora Gostanian and Jackie Finn took over hospitality duties. Few tournaments offer a free lunch, but they provided three free lunches on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We enjoyed every one. Thanks go to all our members who helped with hospitality. Mike Molinari is our new tournament chairman. He is working on a few improvements for the next sectional around Halloween. ROSTER Thanks to Jill Wood, the 2010 Roster of members is now in print. Please pick up your roster at the Fresno Bridge Center. Extra copies, or copies for non-members, are $2. LESSONS MAY 1 A new series of beginning lessons starts on Saturday, May 1 at 9 am. Call Mike Molinari at 559-658-7318 for more information. If you have friends that want to learn, let them know that we are starting lessons for new players. CLUB NEWS It's almost time to file your tax returns and get your refund. John Schnell's Saturday game will offer a $1 refund to everyone who plays on April 17. One of the things that is mentioned in the Zero Tolerance Program is about giving lessons during play. If you really are giving lessons, the way to do it is to write a note and then go over the hand in detail afterwards....maybe at dinner, maybe while you're waiting for the scores - when things are calm. Most of the time, players are not giving lessons, they are just complaining about other's play. A short discussion is ok, so long as you are able to finish play in time. Criticism of partner's play at the table is not ok. Even worse is giving lessons to the opponents when they don't ask for your opinion, or complaining about their play to your partner as if they weren't there. It's impossible to have a private conversation with your partner when the opponents are at the table, so don't try. If you find that you have been offended by another's comments, call the director, and state that another player's remarks are making you uncomfortable. Top Oakhurst players for March were Karen McCartin, Don McCartin, Burke Zane, Al Crane, and Paul Mertens. Top Madera player for March is Carol Kaufman, followed by Everett Bondeson and Bob Mortimer. Gay and Larry Slates lead for the year, with Betty Eden right behind. Top February player at the Fresno Bridge Center was Steve Sharp, followed by Skip Miller, Bert Rettner, and Maggie Mahaffey. Bert Rettner leads for 2010. Top 99er player was Estee Strombotne, followed by Jane Bragg, Jason McAlexander, Jackie Finn, and Gloria Durbrow. Estee Strombotne leads the 99ers for 2010, followed by Marnie Powell. UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links Bay Area Tournaments California and nearby tournaments from Forum ANNIVERSARY PARTY APRIL 18TH Can you believe we've been at our new location for a year already? April 17, 2009, was our last game at 2415 E. Clinton. April 18, 2009, was moving day, and April 19, 2009, was our first day at the new bridge center. We're celebrating our first anniversary on Sunday, April 18, with a lunch provided by the unit at noon, and a Unit Championship at 1 p.m. Come join the festivities. We will also auction off Life Masters to play at a future date. Some of the Life Masters have under 750 points, so if you win the auction, you can play on Tuesday or Thursday afternoon or in one of our open games. The auction will start on April 18 and end on the Peggy Ochs Memorial Game, Sunday May 2. Bid high, bid quick. Proceeds will go to our clubhouse fund.

MunTakeda and Gerard Laquerriere were second and fifth in the open pairs at the Arroyo Grande sectional and third in the Swiss teams with Robby Rouch and Allyson Farrell. Mun and Allyson also won the open pairs. Gerard and Robby were 6th in the open pairs. Congratulations to all our winners! Welcome to new members Alex Sherriffe and Helen Moss.
UNIT NEWS The unit board appointed Anthony Toto to the vacancy on the unit board. Anthony is a member of the education committee, and has taught bridge to his children's classmates. Welcome to the unit board. We are planning to revive the mentoring program, where members volunteer to help less experienced members. We are just in the planning stage, so it may be a few months a way. If you'd like to be a mentor, contact Jill Wood, Richard Meffley, or Anthony Toto. The clubhouse fund is currently operating at a loss. The unit board reviewed clubhouse finances at its last meeting. For the time being, we will make efforts to increase attendance at club games so that the loss will decrease. The board decided to keep club fees at the current level and review finances every six months.
