PEGGY OCHS MEMORIAL GAME SUNDAY MAY 2

This Sunday we honor the memory of those of our friends who played bridge with us and passed away during the last year.   We’ll have a pot luck lunch at noon followed by the Unit Championship game.  Please come to enjoy the bridge and the memories of so many of our friends.

Some of those that we miss are Ina Yssels and Ina Lake, who passed away in the last month.  We honored Mary Jo Davila, our hospitality cochairman by naming a game at our sectional for her.  We miss Bruce Smith, formerly our unit president, and Barry Smith.  Ted Johnson, our host on Friday afternoon is gone, as is Noralee Kreps, a delightful player from Tulare who often played in our afternoon games.  We also miss Jim Honeywell of Madera, Hugh Miller, who had moved to Idaho, Vi Berg, and Millie Stewart, who had moved to Texas.  We also miss Berdie Templar, one of the few players in our unit who actually met Charles Goren.

<>CLUB NEWS
STAC GAMES May 3 - 8
<>
Most club games except Tuesday morning and Saturday will hold STAC games the first week of May.  Come play and win silver points.   The top pairs throughout the western states could win twenty or more silver points in one session.
The Oakhurst leaders for April are Corey Cole, Joe Fox, Paul Mertens, Wall Cucura, and Don McCartin.

The leaders for Madera in April were Betty Eden, followed by Richard Meffley, Al Crane, and Carol Kaufman.   Betty Eden leads for 2010, followed by Larry and Gay Slates and Al Crane.

Remember the zero tolerance policy!   If another player is rude to anyone and ruins your enjoyment of the game, call the director who can right things immediately.  Don't wait to call the director at home.

Top March player at the Fresno Bridge Center was Barbara Thacker, followed by Steve Sharp and Skip Miller.  Steve Sharp now leads for 2010.  Top 99er player was Jane Bragg, followed by Estee Strombotne and George Dalition.  Estee Strombotne still leads the 99ers for 2010, followed very closely by Jane Bragg.

<>LIFE MASTER AUCTION
It may not be too late to bid on a Life Master to be your partner for a future game at the club.   Linda Coppersmith has posted pictures of about 20 Life Masters to be auctioned off on May 2 during the Peggy Ochs memorial game.   If you can’t make it to the game by then to place your bid, call the bridge club before 1 pm on Sunday, May 2, and ask the director to write place your bid. Proceeds from the auction will help to purchase a dealing machine for the unit.  A dealing machine will enable us to duplicate boards ahead of time for our tournaments, so players will never have to do the duplicating before the game.   There are several other times a dealing machine is very helpful, such as for STAC games and lessons.   Bid high, but bid very soon.

PLACES AND FACES

<>            John and Della Schnell were eighth twice in the open pairs at the San Diego regional.  Gerard Laquerriere was second in the Swiss teams at the San Jose sectional.  Gerard and Mun Takeda were second in the open pairs at the Bakersfield sectional.  Also in Bakersfield, Avis Morse and Kim Morris were first in Flight B of the open pairs twice, and were also second in the Flight B Swiss teams.  Congratulations!

Barbara Kelley is cruising through the Panama Canal.
<>
Welcome to new member Marie James.  <>
Our sympathy to Cor Yssel on the loss of Ina, one of the nicest persons you’ve ever meet - we’ll miss her “cookies.”

Our condolences go to the family and friends of Ina Lake, who passed away on March 5.   For many years, Ina was our Sunshine Committee, sending greetings to our members who needed cheering up.  She helped with the Saturday evening game, and played frequently in that game and the Saturday afternoon game.

We’re sorry to report that Millie Stewart, a former Fresno member who moved to Texas, passed away recently.
