GRADUATION PARTY
Pro-Am PAIRS JUNE 27

Our annual party to celebrate our new Life Masters will be held Sunday June 27, 2010 at Noon.  We'll have a pot luck lunch and maybe even sing For He/She's a Jolly Good Fellow to those who made Life Master in the last year. As usual, the party is followed by a Pro-Am pair game, with a drawing for partners before the game starts..  Please come for the party so we'll be able to choose partners and start the game quickly.  Do not plan a partnership; we will draw a partner for you.
Our records show Pete Weber, Juanita Mason, Ruth Christensen, Sue Valdosola, Tina and John Renna, John Simpson, Dora Gostanian, and Paul Messner made LM since our last graduation.  We congratulation them, and invite them to play as our guests in the game.  If any of our members make LM before June 27, they are welcome, too.

CLUB NEWS
NAP STARTS THIS MONTH
Big winner in the STAC games was Steve Sharp and Laura Da Costa.  Their 67.55% game on Thursday morning was good for sixth overall, second in Flight B, and 10.59 silver points.  Lowell Gist and D. Zody were also in the overalls for Wednesday night, finishing 16th in Flight B.  John and Della Schnell were third in the auxiliary pairs Friday night, and Joyce Kauder and John Barrere were fourth in Flight C.
North American Pairs games start this month.  These games pay half red points to the winners, and  are sectionally rated, which is the highest master point rating available at club games.  There are three flights: Open, under 2000 masterpoints, and nonLM (under 500 masterpoints).  Open games are stratified with those flights.  Those who place in the top half of their flight qualify for the unit finals in the fall.  The unit qualifiers may play in the District 21 finals, usually held in a weekend in January in Burlingame.   The top three in the district in each flight can go to the North American finals, which are in Memphis in March next year.
Top Oakhurst players for May were Don McCartin, Al Crane, Ken Doig, Ray April, and Burke Zane.   Top Madera players for May were Denny Green and Morgan Johnson, followed by Carol Kaufman and Larry and Gay Slates.  Larry and Gay Slates lead for 2010, followed by Carol Kaufman, Betty Eden, and Al Crane.

At the Fresno Bridge Center, Steve Sharp leads in April, with Maggie Mahaffey and Bert Rettner right behind.  Steve Sharp leads for 2010, followed by Bert Rettner and Skip Miller.  Jackie Finn was tops for 99ers in April, followed by John Jonassen and Marnie Powell.  Jackie almost caught Estee Strombotne, who still leads for the 99ers for 2010, with Jane Bragg right behind.
The new policy at the Fresno Bridge Center, effective now, is that cell phones must be off or on vibrate while the game is in session.  If the phone must be answered, answer outside the club room.

LIFE MASTER AUCTION

Congratulations to those who won in the Life Master Auctions. Be sure to pay your winning bid and play with your partner.   It looks like we have enough money raised to purchase a dealing machine.

UNIT NEWS
We are still working on a mentoring program.   If you'd like to be a mentor sometime in the future, let committee members Jill Wood, Anthony Toto, or Richard Meffley know.  Mentoring means playing with the same player about once a month for six months or so, helping the player to learn more about the game.  We are also looking into teaching bridge at schools.   If you would like to teach students, please let us know.   We are just looking into it now, so it may be a long time before we can do it.

SUNDAY GAMES
Pro-Am Swiss July 18

We plan to have a Unit Championship game at least one Sunday a month, usually the first Sunday, plus a special event each month.   For July 18, we'll have a Pro-Am Swiss Team game.   Try to save that date so you can play.  Most players enjoy the competition when we have a Pro-Am team game.   We divide all players into four groups according to their master point total; then we pick one player from each group to make a team.  That way, most of the teams are about equal and any team may be the winner.  It's impossible to guess who will win until it's all over.
