<>PRO-AM TEAMS
SUNDAY JULY 18

In June we had a great time with the graduation party, honoring our new Life Masters, followed by pro-am pairs.  In July we have a pot luck lunch about noon followed by a pro-am team game.  We pick your team for you - just come and enjoy the lunch and wait to see who your teammates will be.  Teams are picked according to master points.  All the players are divided into four groups by master point holdings - then each team gets a player from each group.   This tends to equalize the teams so every team has a chance to win.  It's fun, and our players are good cooks - so come and enjoy the lunch and the teams on Sunday, July 18.

PLACES AND FACES

We had lots of gold point winners at the Sacramento Regional, including several first places in the knockout teams.  Don Winton and Sue Gearhart took a second and a third in the Flight B 299er pairs.  Jay Shapiro, Barbara Thacker, Steve Sharp, and Doris Frazer won the Bracket 2 KO teams and were fourth in the evening Swiss teams.  Jim Stefanich won the Bracket 3 KO teams.
Peter Weber, Sue Vildosola, Juanita Mason, and  Judith Nicholson won the Bracket 3 KO teams and Flight C of the evening Swiss teams, and finished fourth in Flight C of the Swiss Teams.  Peter Weber, Sue Vildosola, Judith Nicholson, and Jay Shapiro won the Flight B Swiss Teams. Jim Tritt was third and twelfth in Open Pairs.  Gerard Laquerriere and Richard Meffley were third in the  evening Swiss teams.  Richard Meffley was seventh in the California Capital Swiss teams.  Bert Rettner and Bill Glass were second in the Senior Swiss teams.  John Simpson and Bill McCormick won Flight C of the Senior Pairs.  Gerard Laquerriere was fifth in the Flight X Swiss Teams.  Rick Whitworth was second in the side game.
At the Las Vegas Regional, Judy Zimmerer finished fourth twice and third once in Flight C of the side game.  William Powers was sixth in the 299er pairs.  Max Jacobson and Rick Whitworth were seventh in the Open Pairs.
Curt Reeves was third in the open pairs at the Gilroy sectional.
     Congratulations to our winners!
We like to let everyone know about your successes, but we don't get all the news.  If you finish in the overalls at a regional outside California and Nevada, or a sectional  outside California or south of Bakersfield, let us know so we can congratulate you.

Congratulations to former member Mary Peterson, who made Life Master at the Sacramento Regional.  She may have moved to the coast, but we still think of her as one of our members.

Long time member Helen Bardakjian passed away on May 30th.  She was one of the best No Trump players we've ever known - she could  find that extra trick seemingly out of nowhere.  Though it's been about ten years since she's played at our bridge club, she was still one of the top ten master point winners in Fresno.   For those who can remember twenty years ago before we had computer scoring, Helen was the best scorer at the club.   She never directed, but she was always there to add up everyone's score...she was fast, and seldom made an error.  Our sympathy is extended to her family.
Marlene Robinson is recovering from knee surgery - hurry back!

Get well wishes go to Denny Green, who recently fell and broke his hip.   He had  hip replacement surgery, and is on the road to recovery.  The Madera Bridge club misses him.

NEW LESSONS
Lessons on play of the hand start at
9 am, August 21. (Note the change.)  This is a continuation of the bridge lessons on bidding which started in May.
Call Mike Molinari at 658-7318 for more information.  Tell your friends, too.

CLUB NEWS
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAGGIE

Maggie is celebrating her birthday with a luncheon on Tuesday July 6 at 12:15 - game at 1 pm.  There will be an open section and a 750 section.  Please let her know if you will be playing.  We're not sure which birthday she is celebrating, unless you are a faithful reader of
Aces Places and Faces. Happy Birthday, Maggie.
North American Pairs games continue in July and August - winners get big half red master points and a qualification to play in the unit finals in the fall, and maybe next year in the District 21 finals in Burlingame and North
American finals in Memphis.
Top winners from Oakhurst for June were Don McCartin, Ken Doig, Claire Molnar, Gardner Murray, Al Crane, and Corey Cole.        At the Fresno Bridge Center, Steve Sharp leads in May, with Bert Rettner and Jill Wood right behind. Steve Sharp leads for 2010, followed by Bert Rettner and Skip Miller.  Geore Dalition  was tops for 99ers in May,  followed by John Jonassen and Estee Strombotne.  George now leads for 2010, with  Estee Strombotnee, and Jackie Finn right behind.
We have negotiated with the landlord that the carpet will be cleaned once a month.  This requires some help from the players.  We will ask our players to help move tables so the carpet can be cleaned, and then move them back afterwards so that we can play bridge again.  Please cooperate when it's time to clean the carpet.

UNIT NEWS
Thanks to donations from several of our members, we purchased a dealing machine and are using it in many of the games at the bridge club.  The machine can read all cards and make hand records of its deals.  We are still learning all the intricacies of the machine.  With a little practice, we'll be able to post the hand records on our website, as well as pass them out to the players.  The dealing machine will make our tournaments and STAC games more enjoyable, since we will no longer need to have players or directors deal from hand records - the machine can do it quickly in advance.  We can receive STAC and tournament hand records in a format that the dealing machine can use.
We recently purchased new boards to be used with the dealing machine.  The boards are designed so that the cards are dealt directly into the boards,  increasing the speed and accuracy of the deals.
If the dealing machine is being used, it is no longer helpful to turn the cards over in the board after the last hand is played.  It only slows down the dealing.
Our fundraising efforts from Bid-a-Pro were very successful, but very little of the funds were used for the dealing machine and the new boards.  The cost of the dealing machine came almost entirely from donations.
We're planning a Pot Luck for August - keep Sunday August 29th open for a pot luck and IMP pairs game.

STARTING ON TIME

Why do some games have trouble starting on time?  One reason is that the director must know how many players there are before the game can start.  For example, 6 tables usually uses a three board movement, 6 ½ tables uses a two board movement, and seven tables requires a four board movement.  Players that are not ready at game time, players that tell the director they will play, and then don't, and late players all make it difficult to judge how to start the game.  Directors try to accommodate latecomers, but that could mean restarting the game.  Please let the director know if your plans change - if you are late, or if you can't come when you promised - so  the director can get started on time. Just call 255-0505.
