| BRACKETED KNOCKOUT TEAMS POT LUCK September 12, 2010 We're trying a new event this month - bracketed KO teams. It's just like the bracketed knockout teams at regionals, except that the third match is the final match instead of the fourth. This is a sectionally rated event - so points are the same as at a sectional except they are black points. The teams are divided into brackets of about eight (or fewer) teams according to average master points. The first session on September 12, 2010 (after we've finished the pot luck lunch) will reduce each bracket to four teams. The next Sunday, September 19, the four teams play semi-final matches. The winning teams play for the championship. Each match will be 24 boards, except the first round may be different if there are fewer than eight teams in a bracket. We're having a pot luck before the first match, so bring your favorite food and enjoy a great lunch before the teams begin play. NONLM SECTIONAL STEPHEN BLUMBERG TOPS MASTER POINT WINNER Thanks to hospitality chairman Dora Gostanian and all who helped her, tournament chairman Mike Molinari is able to say that the tournament was a success, even though attendance was a few tables less than last year. As advertised, we had free lunches on Saturday and Sunday, with lots of refreshments before and after lunch. Byron Steinert gave an informative lesson on rules and ethics. The top master point winner was Stephen Blumberg, with Jay Shapiro, Patrick Caroll, and John McGregor right behind. PLACES AND FACES Gwen Davey was 4th in the 199er pairs at the Santa Clara (Palo Alto) sectional. Bill and Jill Wood were second in the compact KO teams, bracket 2. Gerard Laquerriere was third in the KO teams and fourth in the Swiss teams. Welcome new members Bonnie Arcure, Ann Sadler, Nancy Schubert, and Chris and Bill Roberts. Get well wishes go to Mary Peterson, who had heart heart surgery recently. Also to Kathy McLeod, who is having hip surgery. Bob Osmanson is recovering from a recent operation. We're glad to hear that Belva Quattrin's husband Al is doing better. We miss Julie Boucher, who hasn't played bridge for a while due to back problems. Jerry Collins has now been transferred to Horizon. Maggie had a nice short vacation in the Feather River Canyon in spite of the jerk that set fires up and down the highway - it was scary to sit and watch Borate planes fly over your head and wonder if you have to evacuate - fortunately, no. RECIPE FILE We're going to try a new file for our website - favorite recipes. I know someone asked me for a recipe, and I haven't had a chance to share it yet. Starting with the September 12, 2010 pot luck, if you find something you really like, we'll try to see if the chef can share the recipe with you and all our members. UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links Bay Area Tournaments California and nearby tournaments from Forum NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS OCTOBER 24, 2010 About 80 players have qualified at club games in June, July, and August to play in the Unit Finals on Sunday, October 24, 2010. The unit finals is a stratified game - those who qualified for flights A, B, or C may play. Those who finish in the top half of their flight can play in the district finals in Burlingame. The district finals are not stratified - Flight A, open, Flight B, under 2000 mp, and Flight C, nonLM (under 500 mp) are held separately at different times, so if you are eligible, you can play in all three (unless you qualify for the second day of Flight A). You can play in Flight A on January 22 and 23, Flight C on January 23, and Flight B on February 5. The top three in each flight can play at the national finals in Louisville, Kentucky in March. CLUB NEWS Top players for August in Oakhurst were Wally Cucura, Gardner Murray, Betty Ann Dunn, Glen Ford, and Karen McCartin. Top players in Madera were Betty Eden, followed closely by John Simpson and Al Crane. Betty Eden leads for 2010, with Al Crane and Morgan Johnson right behind. Bert Rettner was tops in Fresno in July, followed by Deni Glenn Boeve. Top 99er for July was George Dalition. Steve Sharp and George Dalition still lead for the year. October is player appreciation month - there will be lots of championship games - plan to play. Mary Lou will have a pot luck lunch and a Charity Game on Labor Day, September 6. Sounds like fun. FINDING THE MAJOR AFTER 1 NT I've noticed a lot of our newer players don't know the right bids when you have a major suit and partner opens 1 NT. The basic bids are Stayman (2C, please bid your major) and Jacoby (2D, transfer to hearts with 5 or more; 2H, transfer to spades with 5 or more). Here are the basic bids: With a weak hand (under 8 points): With a four card major, pass. With a five card major, use Jacoby, and then pass, even if you also have a four card major. With two five card majors, use Jacoby for one of the majors. Some people like to play "garbage Stayman." If you do that, you can use Stayman, then bid a major and partner must pass or bid the other major at the two level. You need at least 4-4 in the majors to do that. With an invitational hand, 8 or 9 points: With one or two four card majors, bid Stayman, then 2NT. Partner chooses the final contract. With a four card major and a five card major, use Stayman and raise if partner bids a major. If partner bids two diamonds, bid your five card major. You can't do this if you are playing "garbage Stayman." If your suit is hearts, you can transfer to hearts and then bid two spades. If you are playing garbage Stayman and have 5 spades and 4 hearts and an invitational hand, good luck! With two five card majors, a good convention is to play 3 hearts as invitation. Otherwise transfer and bid the other major after partner bids. More next month.
