| OCTOBER 28-31, 2010 The end of this month brings our Halloween Sectional. Once again we will have free lunches on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Pair games on Thursday and Friday will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a bonus morning game on Friday at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday will have two sessions, starting at 10 a.m. We have two team games - bracketed Compact KO teams on Saturday, and Swiss Teams on Sunday. There will be separate sections for 499ers almost every session. Check the flyers for more details. If you need a partner, Mike Molinari, 559-658-7318 is doing double duty as tournament chairman and partnership chairman. Dora Gostanian's committee is in charge of the three lunches, plus lots of refreshments. You can help by signing up to bring refereshments on the signup sheet at the bridge center, and bringing something tasty to share with the hungry bridge folks. As in the past, we will use the restaurant and another room besides the bridge center for the sectional. We need to take our equipment out of those rooms after the tournament. We would appreciate a few strong volunteers to help Sunday after the tournament finishes. NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS NOVEMBER 14, 2010 The North American Pairs unit finals has changed to Sunday, November 14 at 1 pm. Those who qualified in June, July, or August at any bridge club in District 21 are eligible to play. A list of qualifiers is posted at the Fresno Bridge Center. UNIT NEWS Unit elections are coming up in December. If you know someone who could be on the unit board (including yourself), contact Linda Coppersmith or Mike Molinari or one of the unit board members. PLACES and FACES ANNIE CHILJIAN MAKES LM IN SANTA CLARA At the Santa Clara regional, Annie Chiljian made Life Master by taking third in the Bracket 4 KO Teams with Olivia Stockton and John and Pat Simpson. Peter Weber, Susan Vildosola, Juanita Mason, and Judy Jessick were third in Flight C of the Swiss Teams and second in bracket 3 of the KO Teams. Don Winton and Stephen Blumberg were second in the 299er pairs. Don and John Jonassen were fourth in the 299er pairs. Richard Meffley was fourth in Swiss Teams. Gerard Laquerriere was third in the KO Teams and second in Flight X of the A/X Swiss Teams. At the Bakersfield sectional, Jay Roll and Richard Meffley were first and fifth in the Saturday open pairs. Gerard Laquerriere was sixth in the open pairs. Kim Morris and Avis Morse were first in Flight X and second in Flight A in the Swiss teams. Welcome to Avis, who just moved back to Fresno. Bill Glass was third in the Fast Open Pairs at the Irvine Regional. Welcome to new members Sharon McCoy, and Chris and Bill Rogers. We're sorry we got your names wrong last month. Congratulations to new grandparents - Diana and Matt Papazian have a new grandson, and Carol and Larry Miller have a granddaughter. Welcome back to Kazue Iwatsubo - who recently moved to Fairwinds and has recovered from recent surgery. KEIKO COLLINS RETIRES Keiko Collins is retiring as a club director. We appreciate all the work she has done as a director and club owner. She and Mary Lou Da Costa were partners in evening games for many years. Keiko has run the Tuesday morning game, making it the morning breakfast club in Fresno. Nearly every member of the Fresno Unit has played in her games at one time or another. She is a member of the ACBL Goodwill Committee, and was awarded the Unit's Distinguished Service Award. We hope to see Keiko playing once in a while. Barbara Thacker will direct the Tuesday morning game. Call her at 298-5648 if you need a partner.

UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links Bay Area Tournaments California and nearby tournaments from Forum BEGINNING LESSONS on DEFENSE OFTHE HAND Beginning lessons on defense of the hand start on Saturday morning, October 16 at 9 a.m. This is a continuation of the Bidding lessons which started in August. These lessons are helpful to anyone who took the bidding lessons, and for anyone who has ever played bridge in the past. Invite your friends who want to play bridge to join. For more information, call Mike Molinari at 658-7318. CLUB NEWS WIN A LITTLE GOLD POINTS October is Club Appreciation month. Every club holds a sectionally rated Club Appreciation Championship. Be sure to check the calendar and play in a few. The team games even give some gold points - 5% of the points you win in Club Appreciation team games are gold. The Fresno Unit will have a team game on Sunday October 17 - sectionally rated with 5% gold points. Get your team together. The top players in Oakhurst for September are Don McCartin, Corey Cole, Ken Doig, Gardner Murray and Joe Fox. Top Madera player for September was John Simpson, followed by Morgan Johnson, Betty Eden, and Carol Kaufman. Morgan Johnon now leads for 2010, followed by Betty Eden and Carol Kaufman. Steve Sharp was tops in Fresno in August, followed by Deni Glenn Boeve. Top 99er for August was John Jonassen. Steve Sharp and George Dalition still lead for the year. FINDING THE MAJOR AFTER 1 NT Last month we discussed weak hands and invitational hands. Here is a bit more about those. We mentioned "garbage Stayman," used with a weak hand. When playing garbage Stayman, the opener must pass or bid two spades (if spades are preferred) if responder bids a major at the two level after opener responds two diamonds. Check with your partner whether you are playing garbage Stayman. Those bids normally are invitational, showing five cards in the suit bid. With an invitational hand, if opener bids the wrong major, responder bids 2NT. If opener bids the right major, responder raises to three. Either bid is invitational. (We are assuming you play a direct 2NT shows 8 or 9 points.) With 10 or more points, responder wants to be in game. With two five card majors, I like to bid 3 Spades, forcing. It's come up once in five years for me, and partner forgot. Others use 4 Diamonds. With one or two four card majors, use Stayman and raise to game if partner bids your four card major. Bid 3NT if he doesn't. If you bid 3NT and partner has both majors, he knows you have the other major, so he should correct to four of the other major. With a five card major, use a transfer and then bid 3NT. Partner can choose the final contract. With a six card major or longer, use a Texas transfer ( like Jacoby, only at the four level). If you don't play Texas, use a Jacoby transfer, then bid game. With a five card major and a four card major, you can use Stayman and jump to game if partner bids one of your suits. Jump to the three level in your five card suit if he bids two diamonds. Partner decides whether to play in 3NT or your five card suit. A good convention here is Smolen - you jump in your four card suit rather than your five card suit. That way the no trump opener can play the hand in your five card suit. If you have a distributional hand that may play in a minor suit, you can bid your minor suit after you use Stayman or Jacoby. Bidding a minor suit after using Stayman is forcing, so you can use it to explore for the best trump suit, or to explore for slam with very good hands. REMEMBER, few people ask for bridge advice, but many players get it.
