| NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS NOVEMBER 14, 2010 The Unit finals of the North American Pairs will be held Sunday, November 14 at 1 p.m. Everyone who qualified in club games during June, July, and August is eligible to play. A list is posted at the Fresno Bridge Center of those who qualified there. This is a stratified game, with three flights: Open(A), under 2000 master points(B), and nonLMs under 500 points(C) as of June 1, 2010. If you come in the top half of your flight, you may play in the District 21 finals in Burlingame. Flight A plays on January 22 and 23; Flight B plays February 5; and Flight C plays on January 23. The top three in each Flight play in the North American Finals in Louisville in March. The Unit finals on November 14 has sectional championship rating. The district finals pay part gold points to the overall places. Let's play on November 14! HALLOWEEN SECTIONAL WAS FUN We had several out of towners come to enjoy our sectional, including Bill Corliss from the Sacramento unit, president of District 21. Every president of District 21 has come to one of our sectionals since we joined the district. Attendance was down from last year, in part because of lower turnout in the Compact KO teams. Since we only had one bracket, the matches were handicapped - and that made it interesting. Those with the most master points didn't make it to the finals. As usual, tournament chairman and partnership chairman Mike Molinari was constantly on the phone, making sure that everyone had a partner for the tournament. One thing that was up was our hospitality. Last year we had two free lunches; this year we had three free lunches. Thanks to hospitality chairman Dora Gostanian and her able assistant Jackie Finn and all who volunteered to bring food, we had a great time. Thanks also go to Nancy Boyd our director-in-charge, who was always cheerful and helpful, and to assistant directors Kay Chrisman and Mike Molinari. The President's Award went to Richard Meffley, who won over twenty points at the tournament. The 99er Award went John Jonassen. CLUB NEWS Top October players in Oakhurst for October were Karen McCartin, Genie Krieghoff, Joe Fox, Paul Mertens, Ken Doig, Gardner Murray and Claire Molnar. Top winner in October at the Madera Bridge Club was Virginia Hailey, followed by Morgan Johnson, Denny Green, and Larry and Gay Slates. Morgan Johnson still leads for 2010, followed by Carol Kaufman, Betty Eden, and Larry and Gay Slates. Barbara Thacker is now running Tuesday morning games for the Unit. The game is now an open game. We'll have a Unit Championship game on Tuesday morning November 16 to help start things off. Call Barbara at 298-5648 if you want to play on Tuesday morning. Call Mike Molinari the next three weeks. The top Fresno bridge player for September was Steve Sharp, followed by Maggie Mahaffey, Verlee O'Neill and John Schnell. Steve still leads for 2010. The top 99er for September was George Dalition, followed by John Barrere, Carol Willoughby, and Judy Geary. George still leads for 2010. UNIT UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR with tournament links Bay Area Tournaments California and nearby tournaments from Forum UNIT NEWS PRO AM TEAMS November 21 ELECTIONS It's been a while since we've had a Pro-Am team game - so let's have one on Sunday November 21 with a Pot Luck Feast at 12:15 to start things off. Everyone is welcome - we'll draw for teams as usual. It's a challenge to play with a new team and a new partner, but it's fun, too. The next issue of Aces, Places, and Faces will include a ballot for 2011-2012 board members. Voting starts when thenewsletter is received, and concludes at the Christmas party, Sunday, December 5. It's not too late to nominate yourself or a worthy member - just put the name in the nomination box at the Fresno Bridge Center. MORE NT BIDDING Holding a game-going hand with a five card major and a four card major, you can use Stayman and jump to game if partner bids one of your suits. Jump to the three level in your five card suit if he bids two diamonds. Partner decides whether to play in 3NT or your five card suit. A good convention here is Smolen - you jump in your four card suit rather than your five card suit. That way the no trump opener can play the hand with your five card suit as trump if he chooses. If you have a distributional hand that may play in a minor suit, you can bid your minor suit after you use Stayman or Jacoby. Bidding a minor suit after using Stayman is forcing, so you can use it to explore for the best trump suit, or to explore for slam with very good hands. At the sectional, my partner used Jacoby 2 diamonds to show his 5 card heart suit, and followed with three diamonds. Since I had a good diamond fit, he was soon playing and making six diamonds. After a 1NT (or 2NT) opener, 4NT is seldom Blackwood. It is "quantitative"unless there is an agreed suit. It's a good time to know Texas transfers, which are the same as Jacoby except at the four level. Texas shows a six card or longer suit, so using Texas followed by 4NT is Blackwood - by using Texas you have agreed on a suit. Jacoby transfers show only five or more cards, so using Jacoby followed by 4NT should be quantitative with a five card major. If you want to ask for Aces directly after a 1NT opener, use Gerber - 4 clubs. It's often wise to look for a 4-4 or better trump fit before you worry about Aces. Quantitative means you are asking how good is your partner's hand. If your I NT range is 15 to 17, then 17 is good and 15 is bad. Bidding 4NT directly after 1 NT means bid 6NT with a maximum and pass with a minimum. It shows about 16 balanced points. Bidding 5NT directly means bid 7NT with a maximum and 6NT with a minimum. It shows about 20 points. PLACES and FACES Farid Assemi and Ed Wojewoda were third in the World Senior Pairs in Philadelphia. At the Santa Cruz sectional, Kathy Jones and Mary Jones were third in Flight C of the I/N. Pairs. Jim Tritt and Rick Whitworth won the KO teams and were second in two other KO team events at the Ventura regional. At the Seaside Oregon regional, Rick Whitworth was second and third in KO teams. John and Pat Simpson won Bracket 2 KO teams and were third in Bracket 3. Congratulations to all! Get well wishes go to Bob Mortimer, who recently broke his hip. Our condolences go to the family of long time member Alan Button. Alan was a professor of Psychology at CSUF for many years. He was active in Fresno Community Theater, appearing in many productions.
