UNIT CHRISTMAS PARTY
December 5, 2010
Annual meeting

Our annual Christmas party is Sunday afternoon, December 5. The unit board members will provide the dinner, which starts at noon.  Please come join the festivities at our annual party.  After the dinner, we'll have the annual membership meeting with a short report on the unit's year.  Then a Unit Championship, with an open section and a 299er section.

UNIT NEWS
ELECTION

The official ballot for the election of Unit 522 board members 2011-2012 is enclosed with this newsletter.  All unit members should receive a ballot with their newsletter.  Due to postal regulations, we cannot mail different items bulk mail.  For example, we cannot mail two ballots to some people (for example, husband and wife) and one to others, so we may mail more than  one newsletter to an address.
Our candidates for the board are, in alphabetical order, Gay Berry, Laura Da Costa, Bob Durbrow, Jackie Finn, Dora Gostanian, and John Simpson.
We are thankful to receive a bequest of $1,000 from the estate of T. Bruce Smith.   Bruce was a long time member and former president of the Fresno Unit.  He was in charge of clubhouse maintenance for many years. Because of ill health, he moved to Sacramento before he passed away last year.

RENT INCREASE
When we moved to our new clubhouse, the monthly rent more than tripled.   We have been able to absorb the extra expense through a few fundraising events, but we will not be able to continue paying the rent without using up the building fund.  Most of our members do not want to see the building fund used to pay rent.  Therefore the Unit Board decided to raise the rent to clubowners by $1 per player, effective January, 2011.  The Unit Board also decided to raise card fees by $1 per player on games run by the unit.  This increase should make the clubhouse fairly close to breaking even.   The last time we raised rent was April 2008.

NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS
It must be Karma, but all twelve pairs who played in the unit finals of the North American Pairs qualified to play in the District 21 finals.   All play at the Bayshore Bridge Club in Burlingame, near the San Francisco Airport.  Flight A plays January 22 and 23.  Flight C plays January 23.  Flight B plays on February 5.  If you are eligible for more than one flight, you may play in more than one, but you may not qualify on more than one flight.   The top three pairs in Burlingame in each flight qualify for the finals in Louisville, Kentucky next March.

CLUB NEWS
Our bridge club directors have scheduled lots of parties this month.   Try to enjoy a few of them.  Maggie will have a party for her 750 game on December 14.  Ginny will celebrate the holidays on December 16.   Fabulous Friday evening will have a party on December 17.  Mary Lou and Laura will have a pot luck holiday party on December 27.  Next year's calendar will show a New Year's Party on John's Saturday game January 1.

Nearly every club will have a silver point STAC game the week of December 6 - 10 and Sunday December 12.  Check with your director to be sure.  Tuesday evening, normally a 49er game, will be a 99er game for the STAC. STAC games play the same hands all over the western states, with hundreds of tables competing most afternoons.  If your score beats all the other scores, you could win over 20 silver points in one afternoon open game.
Top winners in Oakhurst for November are Paul Mertens, Burke Zane, Ken Doig and Gardner Murray, Karen McCartin, and Genie Krieghoff. Top Madera winners for November are Carol Kaufman and Richard Meffley, followed by Morgan Johnson and John Simpson.   Morgan Johnson leads for 2010, followed by Carol Kaufman, Betty Eden, and Larry and Gay Slates.
Top Fresno master point winner for
October is Bert Rettner, followed by Steve Sharp and Mike Molinari.   Steve still leads for 2010. The top 99er for October is Jackie Finn, followed by John Barrere and Jason McAlexander.   Top 99er for the year is John Jonassen, followed by Jackie Finn and John Barrere.  Last month's leader, George Dalition is not listed because he went over 100 points.
